 Gilsonite is a natural, resinous hydrocarbon, in mass it is a shiny, black substance that is similar in appearance to coal or a hard petroleum asphalt and is often called a natural asphalt , uintaite, asphaltite, , or asphaltum. It is brittle and can be easily crushed into a dark brown powder. Gilsonite is soluble in aliphatic and aromatic solvents, as well as petroleum asphalt and it is mostly used to harden softer petroleum products
